Catching directions in architecture/buildings

Unaltered image of a section of magazine: Where Philadelphia -January 2020 issue. Publisher: Morris Media Network. Link (https://www.magzter.com/US/Morris-Media-Network/Where-Philadelphia/Travel/)

These 2 pages of the magazine contains photos of artificial structures that display great use of leading lines, and also symmetry (for the top right image.) Over all design of typography is simple and elegant, which matches the characteristics of the photos.

Analysis

  1. Category of type faces

Although most of the typography uses one type of font, a second font can be found on the top right corner for “Where now” and “Amy Gordon.” The first font is a sans-serif font, identified with its even strokes (no thick and thin transitions) and of course, doesn’t have serifs. The second font is a modern font seen from is dramatic thick and thin transition, and although the vertical stress is a little difficult to see since the text is italicized, it can still be seen.

2. What makes the typefaces contrasting

There are a few ways the typefaces are contrasting in this example. The most obvious one is the size. The Title “To Market, to Market” is significantly larger than the rest of the text. second, is weight. In addition to the strong bold title, There is also a different in font weight between the article text and the image description/attribution text. the text under the image is lighter so that it doesn’t become too silimar to the rest of the text, making it conflict. Third and lastly, there is a contrast of form with the italicized text at the top right corner, proving emphasis on the title of the magazine, and also the authors name.

3. Photograph analysis: Leading lines

The photographer must have seen the structure of this bar, and knew that if he or she took the picture from the right angle, it would create great leading lines. the length of the bar accompanied by the long table in the font where men are sitting at strengthens the leading lines. Besides the leading line, the rule of thirds is use pretty well in the photo as well. The metal brown pillar and the left edge of the sign (the one that says distillery, libations…..) are placed right about in the vertical thirds.

4. Conclusion

Taking all that was said above, I think the over all clean design of the magazine spread is achieved mostly by the choice of font, and the photos that posses a sharp structural squarish look. The designer didn’t leave any room for playfulness in the design, but did a great job to make it look professional to match the article.
